What kind of immunization is necessary for hepatitis?

I had a friend who had hepatitis and I was told I should be immunized. What kind of immunization is necessary?

Hepatitis is an infection of the liver. Common forms include hepatitis a, b, c, d, e and g. There are vaccines for hepatitis a and b; no vaccine is available for hepatitis c. Transmission of hepatitis a is fecal (body waste) or oral contamination, while hepatitis b is via blood or body fluid. The hepatitis a vaccine is given in two does and takes 30 days to take effect. People exposed can reduce the risk of infection with an immune globulin injection if give within 14 days of exposure. Hepatitis b vaccine consists of 3 doses. Post-exposure regimen involves with either hepatitis b immune globulin, hepatitis b vaccine, or both. The providers at Gastroenterology Specialists are board-certified experts in the treatment of hepatitis and are best suited to deal with it.
