Can you explain alcoholic liver disease?

Alcoholic liver disease involves an inflamed liver induced by years of alcohol consumption. This can lead to cirrhosis, which causes tissues and cells in the liver to be replaced by scar tissue. Ethanol, an ingredient in alcohol, is toxic to the liver and can impair its ability to filter blood, make bile, aid digestion, and recycle red blood cells. Symptoms, such as jaundice, nausea and loss of appetite depend on the extent of liver disease and usually worsen after heavy drinking. Symptoms may not occur early in the disease, but physicians can detect liver disease using a complete blood count test, liver function test or liver biopsy.
