Can Aspirin cause stomach ulcers?

My doctor suggested I take a baby aspirin daily to help protect my heart. I have heard that aspirin can cause stomach ulcers. How will I know if I have an ulcer?

An ulcer is an open sore in the lining of the stomach or intestine. Ulcers can produce symptoms such as abdominal pain (usually worse after eating), nausea and/or vomiting. However, some people with ulcers don’t experience any symptoms. Taking aspirin or medications like ibuprofen (often referred to an anti-inflammatory) does increase the risk of developing ulcers, but not everyone on these medications will get them. You should discuss your concerns with your physician. Seek medical attention if you experience the above-mentioned symptoms or notice black stools or blood in your stool.
