Q:

I have had diabetes for many years. Now I have been told it is affecting my stomach.

A: What you most likely have is diabetic gastroparesis, a motility disorder that causes delayed stomach emptying. Symptoms include nausea, bloating and fullness. You feel full, because your stomach may, in fact, still be full. It is more common in Type I diabetes but can occur in anyone with diabetes. There is not one simple explanation for why stomach emptying becomes impaired, but there seems to be stomach impairment to the nerves that cause stomach contraction. It is generally not reversible but maintaining control of your blood sugars should help. There are a few prescription medications that may help.
